DERBIERE
These horses escaped death during the Battle of Montelimar – not so lucky, were over a thousand that did not. The Germans gathered many horses from the countryside for their frantic retreat. The 15-kilometer stretch from Montelimar through Derbiere and La Couccurde was dominated by Hill 300 that squeezed the road and rail line against the Rhone River to the west. Hill 300 changed hands during the battle but was mostly controlled by the Germans who fought fiercely for the protection it gave the retreat streaming below.
