THE LIBERATION OF ROME
As the Allied troops approached Rome, Fifth Army Commander Mark Clark, 1st Special Forces Commander Robert T. Frederick (who later commanded the Operation Dragoon airdrop and then the 45th Infantry Division), and II Corps Commander Geoffrey Keyes, along with fellow officers, inspect maps while military correspondents and photographers look on. Clark had disobeyed the orders of British General Alexander to cut the German line of retreat at Highway 6. Sending only the 3rd Division to Valmontone, he instead ordered his remaining troops to capture Rome ahead of British forces. As a result the German 10th Army escaped capture and continued its fight in Northern Italy.
