VALMONTONE
The 3rd Division action towards Artena and Valmontone ended on June 2 and the division turned north towards Rome. In this photo by Howard Nickelson, the bodies of a fallen signal company lieutenant and his driver await a grave registration detail. They were killed during the push from the Anzio beachhead south of Rome on Highway 6 when their jeep was hit by artillery while scouting for a command post and stringing communication wire. Their sacrifice was honored by civilians who placed flowers on their bodies.
