BATTLE OF MONTELIMAR

With the beachhead secured and the ports of Toulon and Marseilles nearing surrender, VI Corps commander General Truscott turned to the pursuit of the retreating German 19th Army. Truscott ordered a mechanized combat team from the 36th Infantry Division called Task Force Butler to move north of Montelimar and cut Highway 7 in the path of the retreating German army before it reached the Drome River. The location was a narrow strip of land between the Rhone River and a high hill named Hill 300 dominating a 15-kilometer stretch where Highway 7 and a rail line were pushed against the river. Task Force Butler with local F.F.I. arrived Aug. 20 with forward infantry units of the 36th Division beginning skirmishes in the battle two days later. In this photo is a vehicle of the German military mail destroyed in the Battle of Montelimar.
