OSTHEIM
The 3rd Division's attack into the Colmar Pocket began Jan. 22, 1945, the first-year anniversary of the division's landings at Anzio. As temperatures hovered near 14 degrees Fahrenheit for a daytime high — the coldest winter in 50 years — and with two feet of snow on the ground, the 1st battalion of the 7th Regiment entered Ostheim from the north at 0400 on January 23. After a heavy engagement with small arms and machine guns lasting five hours, the battle was over.
