PLAINFANG

The winter of 1944-45 settled on the Vosges as the coldest in recent memories. With the Ardennes threat eliminated and the Nordwind attacks being more nuisance than effective, the Sixth Army Group was determined to eliminate the 35 by 40 mile German bridgehead centered around Colmar after the heavy December and January snow but before the thaw when mobility would be at issue.
