BEYOND MONTELIMAR

This German tractor and 105 mm howitzer attracts a crowd shortly after it was destroyed north of Montelimar. In the final two days of the battle, the 36th was in control of the La Coucourde area and the approach to the Drome River bridge was blocked. Many rear guard units attempted to run the gauntlet by using fording locations to the west. At one moment during the Battle for Montelimar, the opposing commanders both felt victory as the German 19th Army commander Weisse was confident he would successfully cross the Drome River by the 27th. Truscott, on the other hand, felt he would control both sides of the Drome River by the end of the same day. The battle ended August 31st when Loriol and Livron fell to the 36th Infantry Division and the road to Lyon was sealed.
