SOUTH OF MONTELIMAR
Another view of the destruction south of Montelimar. In full retreat and under constant harassment during the Battle of Montelimar, the German 19th Army streamed through Montelimar by road and rail using machine and animal as transportation. North of Montelimar, the Germans were struggling to keep a 15-kilometer stretch of Highway 7 open where menacing high ground pushed the road and rail lines into a narrow corridor against the Rhone River and Allied artillery was firmly in place to bombard the roadway.
