SOUTH OF MONTELIMAR
Soldiers of the 3rd Division assemble south of Montelimar. To the north near La Couccurde the 36th Division could not maintain its roadblocks on Highway 17 on August 26. Allied artillery laid down blanketing fire on August 27 and 28 on the roadway but could not stop the traffic moving north. The German 198th Division was the rear guard at Montelimar along with elements of the 11th Panzer Division until they moved to defend the retreating columns.
