AUSTRIA - May 4, 1945
Stars and Stripes announces Admiral Doenitz's order to surrender on May 4, 1945. Brig. Gen. Robert N. Young accepted Salzburg's surrender to the 3rd Division on May 4 with the division ready to establish it's command post there on May 6. Hostilities in Europe were over at 0241 on May 7, 1945 at a signing of unconditional surrender terms in Reims, France. The Russian army demanded its own surrender signing in Berlin on May 8. In Salzburg, the 30th Regiment was assigned to garrison the city.
