OBERSALZBURG - May 5, 1945
On the morning of May 5, 1945, 3rd Division 7th Regiment soldiers Staff Sgt. Bennet A. Walter and Pfc. Nick Ulrich raise a flag at Obersalzberg on Goringhugl Hill, the highest point in the complex while 7th Regiment C.O. Col. John A. Heintges and Lt. Sherman Pratt (of the 3rd Battalion, L Co. that advanced on the Berghof the day before) lead the salute. The direction of this photo is the direction of the view from the massive window of Hitler's house. Easy Company of the 101st Airborne's 506th Parachute Regiment arrived after this ceremony and seeing no evidence of the 3rd Division's visit, assumed they had liberated the complex even though French troops, also witness to this ceremony were controlling the area.
