OBERSALZBURG - May 5, 1945
Published on the cover of Yank Magazine on June 22, 1945, this photograph shows 3rd Division soldiers toasting the capture of Hitler's Berghof sitting by the flagpole alongside the stairway to the main entrance on the east side of the house. The 3rd Division records reveal that Gen. O'Daniel deliberately stalled other elements (including the 101st Airborne) while moving outside his assigned area assuring his 3rd Division troops would capture the final prize of the war. This image was captured on May 5, 1945 by the 3rd Signal Co.
