OBERSALZBURG - KEHLSTEINHAUS
The 3rd Division spent the last few days of the Second World War in Europe where Adolf Hitler built his fortress home. This view is from the Kehlsteinhaus, 2,700 feet above Obersalzberg. From Munich, the division moved south towards the Bavarian Alps where the Allies believed a well-fortified enemy would be found in what Heinrich Himmler planned as the "German National Redoubt". Nearly 70,000 American troops chased the phantom into Bavaria at the end of the war. It was this fear that led to the decision to target Obersalzburg at the end of the war.
