One of the most famous prisoners to fall into 3rd Division hands was Obersturmbannfuhrer Otto Skorzeny. Skorzeny headed special SS forces that wore American uniforms during the Battle of the Bulge and is credited with the rescue of Benito Mussolini from an Italian mountaintop prison. He escaped captivity in 1948 eventually finding refuge in Spain. He never renounced his Nazi oath. Photographer Bill Toomey told how he sat waiting for the manacled and pacing six-foot-two Skorzeny to allow him time to take this photo in Salzburg after his surrender to the Seventh Army on May 15, 1945.
