SALZBURG AIRFIELD
The Salzburgher Flughafengesellschaft, renamed Salzburg Airfield by the American occupation force, received a major upgrade after the 1938 annexation of Austria facilitated by a major Nazi investment that gave the party 80% ownership. It was completely taken over by the Germans in 1943 when Luftgaukommando VII housed a large force there that included the ME 262 jets. Many high-ranking Nazi's personal aircraft and crews assembled here during the war. The airfield suffered little war damage and was one of few fully functional airfields in Europe after the surrender.
