OBERSALZBURG - May 5, 1945
The damage to the kitchen area of Hitler's Berghof seen from the left side is still smoldering from the fire set before 2,000 SS troops deserted the area. Several 7th Regiment soldiers can be seen from the left to the right with particular note to the chairs arranged around the flagpole by the main entrance. Much of the Berghof area was destroyed although an extensive underground bunker system was captured intact. Basement stashes were found to contain some art and tens of thousands of bottles of wine and champagne. One of the biggest stashes was under Goring's house where the 3rd Division "liberated" almost 3,000 bottles. This image was captured May 5, 1945 by the 3rd Signal Co.
