OBERSALZBURG - May 5, 1945
The Berghof, overlooking Berchtesgarden, Austria, was surrounded by a large complex consisting of homes, an SS kasserne, infrastructure, hotels, a greenhouse, a modern farm, and everything Reich Secretary Martin Bormann fancied in this Bavarian fantasyland. Obersalzberg was about 2 miles from Berchtesgaden and 1,200 feet higher. The building left of center is the Platterhof Garage, far right is the Hotel zum Turken with the smoldering Berghof just above it. The damaged buildings in the foreground, below center right, are the Kindergarten (a direct hit) and the Film Archive; to its left are two of the SS Kasserne buildings. The vantage point for this image would be Goringhugl Hill behind the Greenhouse. This image was captured May 5, 1945 by the 3rd Signal Co.
