OBERSALZBURG - May 1945
This image was captured walking up the drive to the Berghof (behind rise on right) from the main SS Gate Haus. The damaged structure on the hill is what is left of Martin Bormann's house; below it to the right, just visible, is the Hotel zum Turken that was adjacent to the Berghof. Bormann directed the development of the Berghof from the beginning in 1934. He was rumored to have escaped after the war but remains found in Berlin in 1972 were later DNA tested to confirm his death believed to be May 2, 1945. The damaged house to the left, Unterwurflehen, is part of the Obersalzburg administrative offices and was occupied by the SS officer in charge.
