MUNICH
A view of the Imperial Lichspiele Cinema in Karlsplatz (Stachus). The destruction around Karlspaltz was rebuilt by the 1960s. Not far from this location in the Altstadt (old city), Hitler's failed Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 set the wheels in motion for his ascension to dictator. The first Nazi demonstration occurred in Munich in 1920. The city was also home to Nazi dissenters like the five Munich University students who published anti-Nazi literature between 1942-43 as the White Rose Society before their execution by the Gestapo.
