AUGSBURG-MUNICH
An unexpected seizure of a bridge across the Danube River by the 12th Armored Division near Dillingen quickly ended plans for the 3rd Division to head to Seventh Army reserve. The 15th Regiment was rushed to defend the bridgehead, crossing the Danube on April 24 in an all-night move. As the entire division joined the attack, several battles were fought before Lt. Col. James L. Osgard's 2nd Battalion of the 30th Regiment faced the final defense outside Munich on April 29. Artillery and tanks of all types defended the Autobahn approach including these anti-aircraft batteries captured by the 30th Regiment on April 29. The following day, the 30th was the first Allied unit to enter Munich.
