The 15th Regiment's 3rd Battalion reached Steinach on April 7, 1945. Advancing troops found a roadblock to the southwest with three Mark V tanks and three antitank guns with almost a battalion of defenders. An infantry-armor battle raged through the night and into the next day before fire from Company A of the 601st TD Battalion destroyed two of the three enemy tanks. The enemy then laid down artillery and Nebelwerfer fire rushing additional armor forward. The continued pressure from the 601st eventually forced a retreat. The damage seen here is on Federgasse near the southern approach to the town.
