BESANCON
La Citadelle (upper left), atop a 383-foot hill covered all areas of approach to Besancon. The Citadelle was completed after six years in 1673. Its thick walls did not deter the 30th Regiment's 1st Battalion with the 9th F.A. and Co. C of the 756th Tank Battalion, that captured the fort on Sept. 8, 1944. The Porte Taillee can be seen just left of center. The bridge over the Doubs has been destroyed by the retreating German army. The river from this point loops to the left and back around the old city to the west.
