BENNWIHR
On December 21, the relief of the 36th Division was complete. Two days later on the 23rd, the 15th Regiment launched attacks against Bennwihr (seen here) and Sigolsheim. German forces were intent on retaking Strasbourg by Christmas as a gift to the Fuhrer. The 3rd Division was intent on thwarting any possibility by securing the high grounds from Sigolsheim to Kayserberg. Bennwhir was secured on Christmas Day although the fighting in the area raged into the evening. In Germany, Goebbels called it the worst Christmas of the war.
