RIBEAUVILLE
General de Gaulle at Ribeauville, Christmas 1944. In the face of the uncertainty after the attack in the Ardennes, SHAEF instructed General Devers to prepare plans if a withdrawal was needed and this included abandoning Strasbourg or leaving its defense to the French army. De Gaulle later sought intervention from Churchill and the American commanders that Strasbourg would not be abandoned during the German's Nordwind Offensive north and south of Strasbourg. Ultimately, it was Seventh Army Commander General Patch's diligent defensive maneuvers that kept the city in Allied control.
