WORMS

The first tank destroyers of the 3rd Division's 601st TD Battalion cross the 1,040-foot Alexander Patch Bridge, named for the Seventh Army commander, over the Rhine River at Worms. On March 26, 1945, the 85th and 540th engineers built this bridge in 10 hours using 131 pontoon boats. In the first 24 hours a count of 3,040 vehicles passed over the bridge.
