BOBENHEIM-SANDHOFEN
Three jeeps and a dozen men of the 3rd Division are ferried across the Rhine River by 540th Engineers on March 26, 1945 as two pontoon bridges are being constructed near Worms and Sandhofen. More than 1,000 vehicles were moved this way across the river in 24 hours. DUKWs and DD flotation tanks also crossed the river in the assault. These ferries expedited the establishment of a ten-mile-wide and nine-mile deep bridgehead on the east bank securing the Seventh Army bridges built at Worms.
