MUNICH
The Stars and Stripes declares the April 30 death of Hitler and heralds the capture of Munich by the Seventh Army. Company C of the 1st Battalion of the 30th Regiment was the first unit to enter Munich on April 30 at 0945 hours. There was no formal surrender because the city's officials had left before General O'Daniel rode into Munich at 1600 hours. Three minor officials and members of the Nazi Party questioned by O'Daniel claimed they had no authority to surrender the city despite being left to care for its 450,000 civilians.
