BAD KISSINGEN
Bad Kissingen and its hospitals were surrendered April 6 to the 30th Regiment. The surrender terms from the 30th Regiment denied an open city and stated Bad Kissingen would be used as a military base. The initial meeting at the town hall was with the 3rd Battalion S-3 and a ranking enemy field officer who had been recuperating at one of the hospitals. Later, Col. Lionel McGarr accepted the surrender of the hospital town and 2,825 enemy patients. Bad Kissingen developed as a spa in the 1500s. Crowned heads of state such as Empress Elisabeth of Austria, Tsar Alexander II of Russia and King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Leo Tolstoy, composer Gioachino Rossini and artist Adolph von Menzel were among the guests.
