DACHAU
A sentry walks outside the electric fence at the Dachau concentration camp. The camp was the Nazi's first concentration camp built in 1933 and was overflowing with prisoners arriving from other locations at the end of the war. A few days before the liberation, about 2,000 inmates, evacuated on a death march from Flossenburg concentration camp, arrived at Dachau on the same day SS Commandant Weiter left with his guards and 7,000 inmates to move south. In one known mass grave along Weiter's route south were over 1,000 bodies. Weiter was found dead in Austria after going on the run, possibly from murder by a fellow officer.
