NUREMBERG
American tanks of the 756th Tank Battalion roll west on Aussere Laufer Gasse in Alt Nuremberg. The 3rd Division's attack from the north began April 17 and lasted 3 days. The 42nd Division attacked on the right flank and the 45th Division on the left. Alt Nuremberg's 11th-century feudal fortifications were ringed by a 15th-century, 7-km, 20-foot-thick, wall system that was later enveloped by the city's 20th century construction. Note the stairway leading underground lower center that is one side of a double stairway that can still be seen today in Aussere Laufer Platz.
