Operation Dragoon - August 15, 1944

Landing craft make formation at 0800 on August 15 as they begin the journey to the beachhead. More than 90,000 amphibious and 9,000 airborne troops participated in the initial two-day southern France landings. At one time, Operation Dragoon was to coincide with the Normandy landings as Operation Anvil. The slow pace of the Italian campaign, the stalemate at Anzio and a constant quibbling over the importance of a southern France landing along with arguments over moving landing craft for use in Operation Overlord had set the assault back two months.
