Approaching Southern France
photographer Jack Cole focuses on photographer Howard Nickelson as the invasion force sails from Italy. Operation Anvil was part of the Allied Mediterranean plans since mid 1943. It went through varied changes and was shelved on numerous occasions until final revival in July of 1944 for a three division assault that followed the planning General Eisenhower had submitted in December 1943 as part of the Mediterranean command.
