NAPLES By mid July 1944, the British were fighting for Caen and the Americans had captured St. Lo in Normandy where the fighting would continue for another month. The Mediterranean Command was in final preparations for the southern France landings for a three division assault on August 15. Part of the armada had been assembling in Naples harbor since mid-June and now Operation Anvil, renamed Dragoon, had General Jacob Devers commanding General Lattre's French forces and the American Seventh Army.
