OBERSALZBURG - May 1945

The Berghof as seen from the rear reveals the damage from the concussion of two direct hits and the fire set by the SS. Just to the left, attached to the main structure seen here, is where one bomb hit what was left of the original Haus Wachenfeld on May 25 when the R.A.F. bombed Obersalzberg. The R.A.F. bombing killed 31 on the ground and lost two aircraft with four dead. At 39,000 feet, two waves dropped over 1,400 tons of bombs, including 12,000 pounds of tallboy bombs. As 359 bombers approached the target just 40 miles beyond the front lines, the site was shrouded in clouds; the SS Kasserne was the main target.
