OBERSALZBURG - May 5, 1945
The Berghof area at Obersalzburg housed a massive fortified complex by the end of the war. SS troops were housed around Hitler's house and many Nazi officials such as Hermann Goring, Albert Speer, and Martin Bormann had homes there. Goring survived the bombing in the bomb shelter under his house. Nearby Berchtesgarden had a direct rail link to Munich and Nuremberg. The damaged structure seen here is the Platterhof Garage with upper level quarters and an addition to the right for staff. These ruins were finally removed in 2000 along with the renovated Platterhof Hotel. This image was captured May 5, 1944 by the 3rd Signal Co.
