ROME - PIAZZA VENEZIA

Although the 3rd Division's push to Valmontone did not achieve the goal of trapping the fleeing German 10th Army due to General Clarke's decision to have American troops liberate Rome, it did hasten the fall of Rome where the citizenry welcomed their liberators on June 4, 1944, just two days before the Normandy landings. Elements of the 3rd Reconnaissance Troop, that was integral during the Anzio breakout, entered the city limits on Highway 6 at 0830 that morning This 1906 building is the Palazzo delle Assicurazioni Generali and is located in the Piazza Venezia opposite Mussolini's office in the Pallazo di Venezia.
