FORT OF MUTZIG
It took a captured half-track with four tons of explosives and the work of a tankdozer to clear a path to the moat where the half-track, set on a driverless ride failed to detonate as it tumbled against the fort's wall. Mortars set off the deadly load breaching a 15-foot hole in the wall of the West Fort as the Fort of Mutzig fell Dec. 5 with 84 prisoners taken.
