BOBENHEIM-SANDHOFEN
Ambulance C-11 of the 3rd Medical Battalion ends its ferry ride on the German side of the Rhine River near Worms. This ambulance road with the 3rd Division from North Africa to Austria making it a likely candidate as the most-driven WWII ambulance in Europe. Driver Dell Thornton's notes say "... the bank was steep, muddy and slippery and all four tires were spinning ... a cameraman trying to get a picture helped push and when the ambulance got momentum he jumped into action to try and take another picture." By March 31, 1945, the Allied armies had completed crossings of the Rhine River fulfilling the promise of the previous year's failed Market Garden operation to leap the Rhine and drive towards Berlin.
