SIEGFRIED LINE

The German West Wall stretched 392 miles from The Netherlands to the Swiss border with 18,000 bunkers and tank traps like these near Zweibrucken. Hitler ordered the wall built in 1938, two years after violating the treaty of Versailles by the remilitarization of the Rhineland. More than 20,000 forced laborers and the German National Labor Service with local workers re-fortified
the line beginning in Aug. 1944.
