AUGSBURG
Augsburg is south of the Danube crossing site in Dillingen. The Danube was crossed again on April 25 at midnight northeast of Augsburg creating a second bridgehead on the right flank of the first. The crossing was made by the 1st Battalion of the 30th Regiment. When the regiment's other battalions were ready to cross just north of the Munich Autobahn, they found that they were targeted by at least 50 guns that held up any crossing until the guns were overrun. About 25 percent of Augsburg's buildings were destroyed during the war. The 11th-century Augsburg Cathedral, seen here, suffered only minor damage.
