NUREMBERG HAUPTMARKT
April 20, 1945

On April 20, 1945, Adolf Hitler's 56th birthday, The 3rd Division held a flag-raising ceremony in the Hauptmarkt in Nuremberg. The 1362 Gothic Catholic Frauenkirche is a prominent feature of the square that was named Adolf Hitler Platz in 1933. The 3rd Division temporarily renamed the platz Eisener Michael Platz in honor of "Iron Mike" O'Daniel, division commander since the battles at Anzio who is standing facing the camera in the center of this photo.
