RED BEACH - BAY OF CAVALAIRE
At the beach command post, 3rd Division officers led by Brig. Gen. Whitfield P. Shepard, assistant division commander, observe progress on Red Beach. Hitler's command on August 16 — known to the Allies through its intelligence intercepts — was to evacuate all but coastal elements of Army Group G from southern France.
