AIX-EN-PROVENCE
Aix-en-Provence was jubilant over the departure of the German army after four years of unwelcome and cruel governance directed by the German High Command. The steeple in the background of this photo is the Eglise St. Jean de Malte; the view is looking up the Rue d'Italie from the Boulevard du Roi Rene. By noon Aug. 23, the 3rd Division had tagged 4,165 prisoners, as it turned its attention to crossing the Durance River.
