CORI
In the friendly-fire incident beyond Cori as many as six American fighter planes strafed and dropped bombs on a stalled 30th Regiment convoy on a road between Cori and Giulanello waiting for engineers to repair damaged bridges. The confusion from the air was complicated by part of the convoy being aligned next to a column of destroyed German tanks and near where German artillery had been located. Photographer Howard Nickelson stated that one of the bombs fell close to the road where this photo was taken on May 26, 1944. In the incident, 35 soldiers were killed and 70 wounded.
