CISTERNA

The remnants of Cisterna's Piazza XIX Marzo seen from the air as Allied troops occupy the ruins. The structure in the center is the remnants of the 1895 Bella Ninfa fountain. Above is the Church of Saint Mary of the Assumption and to the right is the 16th-century Palazzo Caetani where 4,000 citizens took refuge in the underground grottos beneath it. In the first five days
of the Anzio breakout, VI Corps suffered 4,000 casualties while counting 4,838 of the enemy's along with 2,700 destroyed German vehicles.
