CISTERNA

The main rail link between Naples and Rome passed through Cisterna. On the same day American forces captured the town (May 25), II Corps' 85th Infantry Division's 91st Reconnaissance Squadron, passing through the Pontine Marshes, linked with VI Corps troops on the Anzio beachhead. The beachhead ceased to exist and the Anzio forces became the left flank of the American Fifth Army.
