ANZIO BEACHHEAD
This view shows artillery bursts on the German front line. The vast majority of Allied casualties during March, April and early May were from air and artillery attacks including the shells from the two 280 mm German rail guns in the distant Alban Hills known as "Anzio Annie". During March, 83 percent of 3rd Division casualties were caused by shrapnel.
