FRANCE 1944
3rd Infantry Division Clubmobile

Liz Elliott's rainy day sketch of "Sunny France" captures her feelings of camp and duty. The Clubmobile crew roughed it in France sometimes sleeping under tarps in or next to their vehicles.

"They pitched tents in the muddy fields of France, dove into foxholes under shellfire, and were greeted by grateful French and hostile German civilians. Clubmobile groups' vehicles and living quarters were destroyed, and some Clubmobilers were injured or killed as a result of their service. Ultimately, Clubmobilers experienced the war's violence and destruction alongside the men they served. However, their gendered noncombatant status has obscured this reality." [5]

Marjorie Lee Morgan wrote in her memoir The A.R.C. in the Storm: "As we moved with Corps, we became experts in our own ways. Camouflaging the trucks each night, digging our slit trenches, and learning to bargain for eggs or potatoes with a handful of cigarettes.
