CALMOUTIER
In Calmoutier, a medic watches as engineers begin work on a damaged bridge. The buildings in the background advertise the beverages BYRHH and Pikina. Moving from Besancon against increasingly bitter rear guard action from Sept. 10-11, VI Corps next objective was Vesoul nearly 400 miles from the landings in Cavaillon. Vesoul fell to elements of the 15th Regiment and two 36th Infantry battalions on Sept. 12.
