BESANCON
The gesture is played to the end as the knife cuts a photograph of Pierre Laval. Laval, a former two-time Prime Minister of France provided French laborers for Germany and organized the deportation of Jews. Laval fled to Spain but was soon deported to France, where he was arrested and found guilty of treason and collaboration with the enemy. After a suicide attempt, he was executed by firing squad in October 1945. Many days of retribution followed the end of the four-year Nazi rule in France. The Nazi's operation of a room of torture in Besancon fueled a period there which included a "purification board" ruling in favor of the usual retributions.
